Cocoa farmers in four constituencies in Buka Island has signed new partnership agreement with the PNG Agriculture Commercialization and Diversification (PACD) project to continue improving the domestic cocoa market as well as promoting sustainable coconut development in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
Four constituencies on Buka island, Tonsu, Tsitalato, Hagogohe, and Halia will benefit from support from the World Bank through PNG Agriculture Commercialization and Diversification Project after their leaders signed partnership agreements on Friday 26th of April 2024 at Project sites in Novah, Malasang and Tohatsi project sites.
Similar to PPAP projects in the past, their programs will come under lead partners Pemana for the Tsitalato cocoa project and NGIP Agmark will be the lead partner for the Novah Cooperative Society Inc in Tonsu and NGIP Agmark will also be the lead partner with co-partner, Halia Hunkatun Foundation for the Hagogohe Constituency’s Green Tip Farmer Group, Evergreen Paradise Cocoa farmers group and the ST Leonie LKK Diversified Farmers Group from Halia constituency.
Signing ceremonies started in Novah where Lead Partner NGIP Agmark’s Bougainville Operations Manager, Ms Salome Alome Rihata signed with team leader for the cooperative then to Malasang where Fidelis Semoso signed for his company Pemana Limited as lead partner with group leaders and completing all signings at Malis village, Tohatsi where NGIP Agmark Bougainville Operations Manager signed for NGIP Agmark with other group leaders.
Nova farmers is focusing on cocoa rehabilitation for the landowners to establish a productive and economically viable cocoa supply chain linking the Nova farmers and lead partner and cocoa exporter in production, processing and marketing high quality cocoa to improve household livelihoods and alleviate poverty in the community.
Pemana Limited goal in this partnership is improvement in the livelihoods of the farmers smallholders. Meanwhile Halia Hunkatun farmer groups target is to support the lead partners sustainable approach working with organized cocoa and coconut farmer supply groups to support women and youth groups in crop integration and diversification especially on spices and small livestock farming.
The signings were between lead partners and the farmers leaders whilst they were conducted by Mr Roland Kerina (PACD) Project Manager, Martin Powell the Productive Partnership Coordinator and Productive Partnership Officer for the for New Guinea Islands, witnessed by the PNG Cocoa Board and the farmers.
Mr Kerina encouraged the farmer members under the three lead partners to expand their cocoa blocks and not depend on what is given under the project.
“The main objective of this project is to make sure families or households have money in their pockets to look after themselves and can afford to sustain their livelihoods in the long run, ”Mr Kerina said.
