In the lush heartlands of the Inland Baining LLG, one woman’s journey through agriculture is sowing seeds of hope, resilience, and transformation.

Billye Ningi, a devoted mother from Vunapalading No.1, has become a beacon of empowerment through her involvement with the East New Britain Women and Youth in Agriculture (ENBWYIA). Since the group’s inception, Billye has been an active member, embracing opportunities to grow not only crops but also her confidence, skills, and community impact.

Billye’s agricultural journey began with floriculture, gradually expanding into vegetable farming and cocoa cultivation. Her partnership with the former Productive Partnerships in Agriculture Project (PPAP) marked a turning point. In 2018, she received 200 cocoa seedlings through a collaboration with PNG Growers, enabling her to diversify her farming efforts and open a small trade store. She later added peanuts and taro to her crops, demonstrating her commitment to sustainable farming and economic resilience.

“I’ve learned a lot how to budget money, how to plan. I never give up,” Billye said proudly. Despite setbacks, she continues to replant cocoa trees, ensuring her farm remains productive and her family supported.

In July, Billye joined over 50 participants in a Gender, Inclusion, and Nutrition training facilitated by ENBWYIA in partnership with the Cocoa PMU under the PACD Project. The training emphasized family values, budgeting, and nutrition equipping participants with practical tools to improve their livelihoods.

“I feel blessed being part of the project and attending such training again,” Billye shared. “It taught me to be with my family and helped my children learn self-reliance and discipline.” Budgeting workshops were especially impactful. Billye learned to manage her modest income from cocoa and market produce, using it to pay for her children’s school fees and daily needs. “Joining the group helped me budget the little money I get from marketing,” she explained.

Billye’s agricultural ambitions continue to grow. Under the PACD-ENBWYIA partnership, she is now venturing into poultry farming. This month, she will receive chicks, feeders, drinkers, and other materials to support her new poultry project. Her small poultry house is already prepared, signaling another exciting chapter in her journey.

Billye’s story is more than personal triumph it’s a testament to the power of community-driven agricultural initiatives. Her resilience and dedication inspire others in her village to embrace agriculture as a path to empowerment and sustainability.

“I will still be part of the group, and I am happy. I never give up,” she said, her voice filled with determination. As Billye continues to thrive with the PACD Project, her journey stands as a powerful reminder: when women are empowered through agriculture, entire communities flourish.
